some things I left out...
constant chaos...
sister get the sheets, I'll get the curtains. I don't know if they were trying to pack, or just "learning" something.
The boys built a "spider web".
Taylor started the week with new yoyo skills...
accidental wack
good big brother!!
escapees...
"catch the dad"
Oh, dear, look how cute they are. See those smiles. Your not telling me that they have more energy than you. They're so little, where would they even keep it. Poor daddy, eventually it is just easier to hide, but, I think that you need to do better than that to escape the horrors. I think that it took a lot of courage not to assume the "fetal" position. Maybe they are like grizzlies, if you just play dead, they will go away. Just be glad it wasn't "hop on pop" day. Oh no, did they hear me? AAAAH run for your life.
so, what will happen to the "garden"
These palms froze to the ground 4 months ago...
I quit watering the squash...
the butterflies are back and the closest gopher tortoise hole is newly used. I hope the butterflies bring some big, beautiful spiders to the yard before we move. The only small golden silk spiders are already gone. Possibly killed.
The beans still look great, the rain is sustaining them for now.
I know a pointless question to ask a 17 mo, but seriously why is everyone in my house so unclothed all the time. There are a number of times that I wanted to take a picture or video of something that is so very cute/funny/amazing, but I can't because someone is naked. I am not exaggerating when I say that Trevor sleeps naked every night. He gets his cute pj's on after a bath and lays down. But, potty time comes and all the clothes land on the bathroom floor and get forgotten on the way back to bed. The problem for him appears to be putting on clothes after going potty; and for some reason, at home, he can't pee with clothes on. This is actually funny and cute, and he keeps them on in public (with gentle reminders); but his "dangerous end" is under control. He still pees all over the seat and occasionally the floor, but at least it is aimed at the toilet. When he was about 18 months old he learned how to remove his diaper. It appears that Jellybean has now joined the pantsless rank. The same problem I had then is also back. Toddlers think peeing on the floor is funny (no "dangerous end" control). I do too, to a point. This lovely old farmhouse has no carpet, so I can easily clean it up. However, the beds, couch, and some chairs are not so easily cleaned. And, I have enough to do thank you very much. I could become dictator mom and start "punishing" for pants removal, but we have enough important rules that I have to enforce. This rule enforcement department is short-handed, we just don't have the man power to catch all offenders. So the solution? Play outside more. Hopefully the novelty will wear off before we move to the "posh" new home filled with light colored carpet. (I think I will just start looking now for the recommended non-toxic cleaner for carpet. Hmm, I wonder if my vinegar water will do it?)
[As I am typing this, we just had a fabulous unschooling moment. Trevor learned about the opacity of skin by shoving a flashlight in my mouth. =)]
What about the food....
I haven't been trying any new recipes for a few months. I have been sticking to the tried and true meals to prevent wasting food and time. But, this week the waiting got the best of me and I tried some new things. None of it tasted good enough to blog about... But, I have plans for changes that may fix them. I always make substitutions to improve the health of the recipes, so I have to try them I few times before they are good. I am hoping to find a desert to make with these figs from our yard because they are so sweet right now, but I have some big dishes to make for the freezer. I am trying to avoid cooking at least a meal a day until the move is finished, but... I mean... how much will I have to freeze to do that.
These were the cornmeal cookies from the Moosewood Restaurant Deserts Cookbook. I also made some chocolate cookies that were good, but I didn't take a picture. The cornmeal were everyone's favorite. The only part of the recipe I changed was the cornmeal. I think that I know how to make them better next time. Probably the whole grain cornmeal that caused the problem. And, I want to reduce the sugar and oil a little more. But, they were all eaten, so they couldn't have been that bad.
This is the patched up pizza crust. It was the Jamie Oliver recipe from the delicious tags; I used whole grain flours so I can't blame the recipe, but I have yet to like a whole grain pizza crust. But, with a red pepper sauce and natural cheese it was edible. And, there was enough dough left to freeze two crusts.
who said TGIF.....
...They were nuts! Where the hello did the flippin week go? At least Trent had today off, so I put his butt to work! Whew, dead van batteries, two runny noses, one determined almost 3 year old, and the return of Captain Clickypants. This time he deleted all the emails I have been saving for Taylor's chemistry lessons. So, now I have to backtrack and remember where the heck I even got the emails from. The astronomy lessons from about.com were easy to recover. I can only shake my head and dream of the bigger house. I hope the additional space will help.
But, the problem is more one of the kids being in our laps while we try to do anything. Emails take forever; you have to use one hand to type, and erase everything that gets added in the struggle, and there's all this great stuff on the desk to reach for, and "this is boring, can't we just go outside"...It's funny that none of us ever complained about the furniture in the living room all being so close, either, until we saw the new place. Now, everywhere I look I see things that "need" more room. When we moved here from our 2 bedroom duplex we had a 9 mo boy, an almost full time live in niece who was 6 (who we miss =)), and our oldest was 8. So we needed this bigger place. To us then, this place was huge.
It was also the first "house" I had lived in (except two months with friends). But, I was 3 months pregnant; then we decided to homeschool, Trent changed careers and that altered our schedules... So, in many ways we slowly outgrew the house. But, space or no, we thought we would stay here 6 years. So, Trent rebuilt the bathroom, built a fence, and we painted lots (well, we have some unfinished painting). It was great to get to make it so colorful, because I have lived in beige apartments forever. Probably it was good practice too, because I know we learned/had to fix a lot.
I would say that it is definitely nicer now than when we arrived, which is what we intended. But, we are being cut short in our efforts.
Besides the daydreaming about space, we had a busy week. In addition to the interesting adventures mentioned above, we also had a precariously perched branch that we decided to knock down. I didn't want it to come down while the kids were playing.
I was trying to keep the babies out of the way, but I did grab a few pics. I didn't get pictures when the boys got in costumes and had a "battle" in the front yard. But, there is a blurry picture with Taylor's mace that I snapped while trying to get him to demonstrate the height of the elephant ear palms ( I think they are called).
I also didn't get a picture of our poor dog when he dragged his empty water bowl to me. (I swear, he had water the day before =)). But, it was funny to see him drag it in from the bedroom and set it in the floor and look at me like, "Excuse me, I believe you are forgetting something." Poor thing.
I have a feeling Trevor is going to hate me for the underwear pictures one day. =( I hope not.
Aaah, I can't remember what he said earlier that was so funny! Anyway his grasp of language is providing never ending laughs for us. And, he is doing the same funny thing that Taylor did at two. He puts himself in fake danger and yells for help. Sometimes his acting is good and he really sounds like he is scared. Other times he just laughs the whole time. He sticks his legs under the bed and pretends to be stuck, or lays on a stack of pillows that is ready to topple. It's great. These are the things that I hope I don't forget when the kids are older.

Where is your diaper, and why isn't it on your butt?

Why didn't I just say Hitler?
My husband tells me that I am unable to "dumb" things up. I can't just nod and say, "Oh yes, that's very interesting." I have to say, "Oh yes, I read about that in Smithsonian, however there is an interesting other view/side presented in Discover last month. It says.....". I think that I now see what he means. I decided this week, against my better judgement to participate in a little contest that a person I have known for some time created. It was simple enough, he asked who you would depants and when (if you had a time machine). Now, when I first saw the site only one entry was made. (George Bush) With my obvious nemesis chosen, my next thought was Hitler. No, I thought, too easy. My next thought went immediately to Al Gore. I don't know why, but it annoys me that he got the noble prize. I didn't make the entry then, because I knew that most people would misinterpret it. So, after thinking about it for a day, I couldn't come up with anyone else I'd like to pants. I can think of a few I wouldn't mind punching or cussing at, but none deserving a jovial, "I like you, but you need to take yourself less seriously" depantsing. At this point I thought, "Just don't enter at all, leave the contest to people who are capable of seeing pantsing as a real malice. Let them enjoy the passive aggressive expression of hate without your "literal" interpretations of everything." But, alas, I am learning to accept myself, and also trying to put myself out there before I become a recluse. And, maybe I love a little controversy. So, I entered.
I would depants Al Gore, right as he accepted the nobel prize. For three reasons. At least then the clip they played over and over again would have been entertaining. And, 20 years from now when he tries to say that he fixed global warming, we can all laugh again. Also, it might have taken that “I’m important and this matters” look off his face.Of course, if your going to be controversial, you should expect opposition. I didn't expect any votes of support. But, my oversensitive "please like me" attitude was brought out by two votes against me. I had to explain myself better. So I added.
oh seriously, I “believe” in global warming. But, did his video really fix anything. If he really wanted to help he’d run for office again. That only provoked further arguments supporting his efforts to inform the public. So, finally I said this.
I am a big Al Gore fan. I have read most of his books. However, his video has given lots of confused Oprah fans the misconception that they now understand global warming. Also, CO2 is not the only environmental concern needing everyone’s attention, and Gore knows that. Also, I only pants people I like. I would cuss at George Bush (and he was taken =)), and I couldn’t do anything to a POW, no matter how much I dislike his politics. Now, at this point, what I really wanted to say was. Additionally his video used the least "provable" information about global warming and added a doomsday spin that even I found aggravating. If it had been made from a real scientist view there would have been studies about acidification of the ocean, other greenhouse gases, and possible real steps toward solutions, etc. Also, it is not hard to jump from CO2 pollution to toxic fertilizer to plastics in the ocean. I know because I have made those jumps. I am just saying that if you think global warming is bad, what about the 20 other problems that are going to cause major issues before we even get close to giving up fossil fuels. At any rate, now I know why my husband just tells our neighbors I am antisocial, rather than telling them, "You can meet her, but you'll regret it." I do agree that sometimes I should just nod and smile. But, that's what people used to do to me, and I never learned anything from it. I was "dumbing it up" for real for years, because I didn't know anything about anything. Now, if someone 10 years ago had told me, "You know, I read in Discover that "warming" isn't the only threat of global warming." I would have thought Hmmm, what are the other threats. That would have led me to "oh, no I better not eat that." And, I might not have gained the 100 lbs I am struggling to lose now. Sometimes, people want the truth even if it shocks them. I know I didn't give any "truth" in the contest, but that is always my motive. The whole truth; I am always hopeful I will find someone who knows something I don't about the subject and then, I will learn more. Ahh, the circle of learning. At any rate, it was fun to enter, check out the contest yourself. The new site is MentalMagma.com. Oh, and vote for me! 1 comments: Gabriel said... Thanks for the link, Dana, I'm glad you like the site. I agree with you about global warming, it has gotten disproportionate press. Anyway, your post made me laugh, when I made the contest I knew Hitler would be mentioned several times. Gore's a more interesting answer, but yes, it looks like you will pay the price (not winning the contest) because I think there is a sentiment that anti-Gore = pro-Bush. Oh well, there's always next week's contest. :) July 1, 2008 11:42 AM
